Keeping Your Pearls Perfect

By: Amidon Jewelers

Before June comes to an end, let's take a moment to reflect on its birthstone, the pearl. No other adornment says class and good taste like a string of pearls. Plus, they match almost any outfit.   Pearls have awed people throughout the ages, from the time of the ancient Egyptians up to the present day. They’re farmed in many places around the world, including China, Japan, Indonesia, Burma, Thailand, the Philippines and Australia. So join in this international movement and wear your pearls, whether you’re a June baby or not. Keep in mind that pearls are also the traditional gift for a first wedding anniversary.   For those of you who love romance in your stones, here’s a little pearl lore:

  • In one Chinese myth, pearls fall from the sky as dragons war in the clouds

  • Romans wore pearls to gain the favor of the goddess Isis

  • Old stories associate pearls with modesty, courage, friendship, loyalty, health, truth, integrity and chastity

  • Some folks believe pearls have healing properties, especially for your intestines, heart, stomach and spleen. They’re a great get well gift!

If you tend more toward the practical (or even if you don’t) you should know how to best care for your pearls. These porous treasures are delicate. When you’re getting dressed, they should go on last—after your makeup, lotions, potions and hairspray, all of which pearls can absorb. Don’t let cosmetics eat holes in your lovely pearls!   To keep pearls clean, wipe with a warm, damp cloth. If you don’t keep them clean, pearls change color. And we’re not talking something pretty, like changing to pink or lilac. You can use mild soap, but not detergent. If they’re extra-grimy, try an acetone polish remover. Rinse in clear water. Dry pearls by wrapping them in a thin cotton towel. Store pearls in a silk or felt pouch. Remember, they scratch easily, so don’t throw them in with your other jewelry. And avoid airtight bags, as lack of moisture can cause cracking.   If you wear you pearls frequently, you should have them restrung every year. Amidon offers customers an excellent pearl restringing service. We restring your pearls on real silk, with or without knots between, depending on the size of your pearls. We can also offer a new clasp—standard or custom, gold or silver—to suit your preferences. And if your necklace has lost some pearls, don’t worry. Amidon offers bead matching to make your pearls look like new again.
