Keeping The Family Heirloom Ticking

One of the most enduring symbols of a family that is connected is the family watch, passed down from generation to generation. Even as the world changed, first with the introduction of digital watches and then supplanted almost completely by the clocks that are part of cell phones, people still held on to these family heirlooms. Unfortunately, the biggest challenge often confronted by family members was finding skilled technicians that specialized in watch repair when the watches broke down. It would be disheartening to pass down something that was now just a symbol and not a working watch, but those feelings were tempered by the concerns over who to trust with the watch.

Amidon Jewelers – Put us to the test

The art of watch repair fell out of flavor as the digital watch revolution was coupled with a shift in society towards more disposable items. When the cost of replacing something became less than the cost of repairing it, there was little incentive for people to learn the trade. Repair shops of all kinds began to close up shop, and those that survived did so by becoming a “Jack of all trades” establishment. It was not uncommon to see a shop that specialized in repairing electronics and appliances also advertising their watch repair services as well.

The trouble with such an establishment is that watches require specific tools and parts to keep working properly. It is easy to imagine that repairing something so small and yet with so many moving parts has almost nothing in common with replacing the belt on a dryer or rebuilding the motor on a vacuum cleaner. The only option left for people was to try and contact the original watch manufacturer and hope that they had somehow survived the collapse of the industry and could perform the work needed. If a person was lucky enough to find the business in question, they would then have to spend several anxious months while the watch was away.

The drive over the last several years towards custom design jewelry has created a new crop of trained professionals proficient in the art of watch repair. Many of them train directly with the companies that created the watch and are equipped with the proper tools. In just a matter of weeks they can restore the watch that has been in the family for generations back to its original glory.

this fall, and I have been searching to find him the perfect gift. It is more than just a present of “Congratulations.” You see, his father passed away several years ago, and so for most of his childhood, it has just been the two of us. I know it has been a struggle for him, watching his friends grow up differently than he did, and I wanted to somehow let him know how special he was. That was when I remembered the watch.

The men in my husband’s family had never been the type to wear fine jewelry. They certainly appreciated it, and my husband had a fantastic eye for finding the most beautiful pieces, from the diamond engagement ring he proposed with to the pearl necklace he surprised me with on our tenth anniversary. The one piece of jewelry that was important to the men, however, was a watch that my grandfather-in-law had gotten as a gift many years ago. It had been passed down from father to son, and my husband had worn it proudly.

After the funeral, I put it away with so many other things I couldn’t bear to look at. Remembering it now, I went up to the attic and started searching through the boxes. It was a bittersweet occasion, as many smiles as there were tears, and eventually I found the watch. Unfortunately, after all this time packed away, it had stopped working. I wanted my son to have this watch, but I didn’t want to give him a broken gift.

Talking with a girlfriend, she mentioned that the last time she had been downtown, she saw that the local jewelry store offered watch repair. I was cautious, because the watch was so old, it might be impossible to find someone who knew how to fix it or know where to get the parts. The repairman had the proper tools for the job, and even before he opened the case, he told me the story of the manufacturer, the history of this model, and, most importantly, that he could fix it.

I picked it up today and it looks and run beautifully. I can’t wait to give it to my son, a gift from both me and his father.

May Birthstone

There are less fine large emeralds in the world than there are diamonds! Emeralds vary greatly in color from deep to light deep green. Most large emeralds have cracks and inclusions and may be cloudy. Natural inclusions are often referred to as ‘The Garden of the Emerald”.  Emeralds are commonly oiled to disguise the flaws and enhance their color.

The emerald belongs to the beryl family of minerals, or beryllium aluminum silicate in chemical jargon. Emeralds can lose color when heated strongly.

Emerald was mined in Egypt as early as 330 B.C. Today, most of the world’s emeralds are mined in Colombia, Brazil, Afghanistan, and Zambia.

Sometimes used to symbolize the reproductive forces of nature, and believed to grant the owner foresight, good fortune, and youth.

Do not wear your emerald ring on while washing dishes or using soap, emeralds will attract grease and soap.  Avoid wearing your emerald when you might be engaging in physical activity that might scratch the stone.

Do not use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners or harsh chemicals. Clean your emerald using room temperature running water and a soft toothbrush with mild soap like hand sure to clean the underside to remove accumulations of dirt and grease. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Preparing for the Empty Nest

Dear Moms who have their baby graduating high school and leaving home this year – We know what you are going through. A flood of emotions is coursing through your body, scared about where the future will take both you and your child, and excitement about what the future will bring. We at Amidon Jewelers have exactly what you need to start YOUR future out stylishly successfully!

Since the day your son or daughter started Kindergarten, if not pre-school, you have been the co-owner of Mom’s Taxi Service. Chauffeuring him here and there, from one practice or club to another, the amount of gas you’ve put in your car would get you around the world a thousand times. You’ve scraped melted crayons off your upholstery, and half-eaten cheeseburgers under your seats. It’s time to drive in style.

No, unfortunately Amidon Jewelers is not offering to give you a top-of-the-line luxury car with heated leather seats, GPS and a moon roof. We are, however, hoping you’ll turn this key to a future life of health and happiness.

When Dr. Seuss wrote, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” we’re sure he hoped it would hit a larger market than just the graduating seniors. Think, Mom! With your weeks now free of countless practices, school drop-offs and pick-ups, and weekend pizza parties, you have time to travel the world! Spread your wings and fly – To Australia? Europe? Anywhere you want! This silver and diamond wing pendant will help you fly with flair!

Over the years, we are confident there were plenty of times you wanted to reach out and ring your son or daughter’s neck. Whether it was due to missing curfew (and worrying you out of your mind), or because of the mud he tracked all over the house, with your love you also became exasperated from time to time.

While we can’t guarantee his college days will alleviate the feeling of wanting to ring his neck, we encourage you to ring yourself instead. How? With a gorgeous fancy diamond ring. Regardless of rain, every day will have sunshine when you wear this white, yellow and rose gold ring featuring its spectacular center yellow diamond.

Only time will tell what the future holds for your child as his future progresses. But time is in your hands now that you have a lot more of it to play with! Now’s the time (no pun intended) to play with it fashionably! Enjoy an evening out with the ladies or a leisurely trip to the spa unconcerned about the time except for how it looks on your wrist. Part of their “Adventurer Collection,” Bulova’s beautiful watch encourages you to take your time into your own hands and make every moment of your life an adventure!

Watch Your Time

In much of the United States, Daylight Saving Time will begin on Sunday, March 10. At precisely 2:00am, the official time will in fact be moved forward an hour to 3:00am, causing a loss of one hour of sleep for those of us already in bed. While we might not like waking what feels like an hour earlier for work on Monday morning, our children, no doubt, love the fact that their room may still be lit by sunlight when they go to bed.

Originally conceived by Benjamin Franklin in 1784, he wrote about it in an essay called, “An Economical Project.” After attending a demonstration of a new type of oil lamp, Franklin suggested Daylight Saving Time as a means of conserving energy and natural resources. Even today, the amount spent on additional lighting needed in the morning hour is greatly offset by the amount saved in the evening with an additional hour of sunlight.

With all the technology advances we have seen since 1784, some may find it amusing that it’s easier to lose track of time now than ever before. The invention and increased functionality of the cell phone have nearly eliminated the need for a watch, except for when increased App usage kills our battery and our phone dies. Amidon Jewelers is not ready to say goodbye to the wrist watch, however, and encourage you to take your time into your own hands with a watch from our beautiful selection.

We may not want more Winter, but who wouldn’t want this beautiful Bulova Wintermoor Collection watch? Designed with stainless steel, eight diamonds and a white leather band, this watch isn’t just gorgeous but multifunctional as well.

This women’s Citizen Eco-Drive Riva watch may just be beautiful enough to make you ditch your iPhone 5… For time-keeping purposes at least. With a contemporary bracelet design, this watch is embellished with a 24-Diamond case and is water-resistant to 100 meters. Can you say the same about your cell phone?

With both 12 and 24 hour time tracking, maximum depth memory AND depth display to 125 feet, men who love deep water sports will undoubtedly enjoy the benefits of this watch. The Citizen Eco-Drive Promaster Depth Master Chronograph is water-resistant to 200-feet, and unlike your cell phone, could probably survive a washing in the laundry after returning from your deep-sea trip.

As Daylight Saving Time takes effect in the next couple of weeks, Amidon Jewelers encourages you to schedule outings that take full advantage of your extra hour of sunshine. Whether an evening out with friends, or a long overdue vacation, we have the perfect time-pieces to adorn your wrist and keep you fashionably on-time and accessorized.
