Shopping For A Bridal Shower

(Finding Fun Bridal Gifts To Help A Friend Smile.)

It’s kind of funny that for as much as people dream about getting married, when the time actually comes, they stress out like they’re applying for a mortgage and trying to earn their driver’s license at the same time. My cousin is getting married this August and after the bridal shower she had, full of uptight relatives and a barely breathing bride, I knew I had to do something to help her relax in the middle of it all. Fortunately, we live in the same town, so when I found a weekend in June we had off together, I told her not to make plans. Then I called every fun friend I knew.

The good thing is that even though the two of us aren’t super close, we spent enough time as kids so when there was a gap between parties – and that’s kind of what it was – we still had fun talking about her wedding, the diamond engagement rings her fiancé had looked at and the wedding bands they were settling on. In between old heart to hearts, my friends and I took her out to one fun night spot after another, the only rule being her phone was off limits (I had told her fiancé before that she would be home late, but not to worry).

The night ended at an all-night diner, the six of us having breakfast and coffee and being very thankful we didn’t have to work in the morning. That was when I gave her what I think was the favorite bridal gift of all. It was a simple pendant, just a gold chain and a dolphin, but I remembered from when we were kids and she talked about how beautiful they were. I told her when she opened it that I didn’t expect her to wear it all the time, but rather let it be a reminder about all of the fun parts of who she was in the middle of the stress.

She laughed and put it on immediately, saying she was probably going to need that reminder every day between now and the wedding.

The Language of Jewelry

So many incredible and important events in my life have been commemorated by meaningful jewelry pieces - where they were gifts or conscious fashion accessory choices. My graduation was marked by a gifted pair of sapphire earrings from my mother, prom was made special by my great grandmother’s pearl necklace and my sixteenth birthday was commemorated with a second ear piercing. I hadn’t realized the commonality, however, until I began packing up my things to make a cross-country move. I had to pack lightly. I used an old weekly pill container – the kind that separate your medicines from one another based on what day you are supposed to take them – and placed the earring pairs I really wanted to take into the boxes. My necklaces and bracelets fit snuggly in a Ziploc bag, tucked away in my checked luggage.

My collection was small and I took almost all of it with me when I got onto the plane. Friends accessories, gifted to me to save from the sad fate of thrift store donation, gave me some of my favorite pieces, including a pair of glittery spider shaped studs and plain silver hoops. Others were pieces I had shamelessly thrifted, like the giant lightning bolt necklace I had gotten from my favorite local resale location. They all had a story. Some of them were more special than others, though. My grandmother’s emerald earring studs, my mother’s sterling silver Celtic style watch, a pair of shamrocks bought for my by an ex-partner I remained on good terms with.

Each combination of accessories I chose for a concert, a celebration, a wedding, a special night out, whatever – all of them were carefully curated to tell a story, share a message, or convey a special and specific kind of feeling. The moment it really dawned on me was the morning I was finishing up preparing for a job interview. It was my first interview for a non-minimum wage job. I didn’t have a word for the style I wanted to convey, but I went right for the imitation pearl studs and the hanging necklace of polished purple stone which made a subtle statement against the white of my silk shirt. That same night, I threw on a t-shirt, took out the studs and took off the necklace only to replace them with wild statement pieces for a concert I would be attending. Jewelry is a language I’ve been speaking all my life; I only realized its intricacies as I entered adulthood.

Coloring Your World With Diamonds

Our daughter’s sweet sixteen was coming up and my wife and I were stressing over what would be the signature gift. Along with typical birthday gifts, we wanted to find something special that she could keep forever and remind her of this day. We knew we wanted it to be some piece of fine jewelry, but that was the problem: how to find a piece of jewelry that was truly unique?

My wife came home one night from work very excited, but waited until after the kids went to bed to tell me what she had found. She stopped at the local jewelry store on her way home from work, just seeing if there was any inspiration among all of the diamond jewelry. We had discussed that something like a diamond pendant or maybe a diamond bracelet would be a good option, but we were having trouble finding one that we thought captured our daughter’s personality the best. While she was looking, one of the helpful sales associates approached her and struck up a conversation. When my wife told the young lady what our dilemma was, she brought my wife down to a display case we had somehow missed in our previous visits.

This case was filled with all sorts of colored diamond jewelry. Not only was there a full selection of diamond earrings, necklaces and bracelets, but all of the diamonds had color in them. Before my wife could even begin to get skeptical, the woman explained that all of the coloring happened naturally while the diamonds were forming. My wife said that when you looked closely, you could see that even all of the pink diamonds – the color she knew would be best – were slightly different from each other.

We went back that weekend and sure enough, I could see the slight variation from diamond to diamond, but within each diamond, the color was almost flawless. We settled on a beautiful pink colored diamond pendant. At the party, my daughter was blown away and almost in tears when she thanked us. That night, as we were all going to bed, she came into our room and thanked us again. And she was already wearing the pendant.

Designing The perfect Diamond Gift

My wife’s birthday is March 25th. Probably the best thing about it happening when it does, besides the fact that it gives us an extra reason to celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of spring, is that is gives me exactly three months to make up for what I didn’t give her on Christmas. Usually I do well, and what diamond jewelry she doesn’t get in December, I can always make up for on Valentine’s Day, but her birthday gives me one last chance to give her the perfect gift.

Make no doubt about it…my wife is always perfectly happy with whatever I give her. If anything, it’s me who spends the next few days pestering her, asking her how happy she was, and if there was something else that would have made her happier. Half the time, I think she just makes something up so I’ll stop being a pain, but she’s smart enough to know that whatever she says will probably show up in a box at the end of March.

This year, she said that as beautiful as the diamond jewelry was that I bought her, she always imagined having a piece of jewelry designed just for her. Turns out she did enough research on her own to know that custom design jewelry was not only easier to do than ever before, but also more affordable than it had ever been. She gave me enough hints so that when I met with the artisan at the local jewelry store, she and I could come up with a stunning unique diamond pendant that was exactly the style of jewelry that my wife wanted.

It isn’t just pendants than they create, either. The artisan was telling me in the last year she has helped people design diamond engagement rings, diamond earrings, even bracelets and necklaces. Technology has made the process of custom design jewelry so efficient that as long as a person has just a few weeks, almost anything they can imagine can be theirs for just about the same price as a traditional piece of diamond jewelry. I’ll find out soon enough if it is the perfect gift, and if it’s not, I’m not worried. Our anniversary is in June.

Back to School

If you have school-aged children, back to school is a mixed time for the whole family. You kids may face the beginning of another year with excitement, trepidation, or a bit of both. Depending on whether you are in the position to stay home with them, you might miss them, or be relieved to have time to get stuff done. Or both. And we all can remember the uncertainty of a new year, perhaps a new school, as we smell that first tinge of autumn in the air.

Perhaps this is the year to make a small jewelry purchase part of back-to-school shopping. Wearing a bracelet or earrings you chose can remind your son or daughter of your love, values and protection when faced with changes and challenges.

Amidon has a variety of pieces appropriate for that first piece of “grown-up” jewelry. For less than $100, you can buy your middle school or high school daughter something she can treasure for years, but which still looks suitable for a teen.

2013 Prom Trends

Ladies and gentleman, THAT time of the year is upon us. The birds are chirping, the trees are beginning to show green, and slowly the flowers in our gardens are beginning to bloom. What season are we in? If you’re a high school girl or boy, you’ll likely think, ‘Prom Season!’

Saturday afternoons in the floral department at the local grocery or florist shop will become increasingly busy as teenagers dressed in gowns or tuxedos arrive to pick up their date’s corsage or boutonniere. Important accessories to help complete the prom attire package, the flowers on these pieces are often dyed to match the color of the girl’s dress. But how about the rest of HER accessories?

Mom and dad, this is where you come in. Sure, you’ve probably already helped cover the cost of her dress, hair, nails and shoes, but how about accessorizing your daughter with a piece of your own to help her make it a night she will remember?

The Prom Trends of 2013

High Necklines

As a parent, we’re sure you won’t be unhappy to see that necklines worked their way up on the body this year. Eliminating the need for a pendant or necklace of any kind, a dress of this style will be complemented perfectly by a stylish pair of earrings and/or bracelet. Amidon Jewelers has precisely the pieces you’re looking for.

Reminiscent of an infinity symbol, while wearing this Silver Diamond Bangle your little girl will never fail to remember that her mom and dad will always be there for her. Three diamonds accent the top of the bangle, each one representing one of you.

Turquoise has been an extremely popular color in recent years, and this year is no exception. Dads, remind your little girl that even though she’s almost out of high school she’s still “Daddy’s Little Girl” with a pair of Silver Diamond Earrings. These fancy diamonds will coordinate perfectly with her turquoise dress, and the hearts will remind her just how much she means to you.

Short Skirts and Asymmetrical Necklines

Complicating the accessorizing process a little further is this year’s trend of asymmetrical necklines. A fantastic pendant can really make this neckline POP, and the shape encourages the wearer to embellish herself with a great pair of earrings.

Playing off the criss-crossing lines which make up the asymmetrical neckline of her dress, we found this Imaya Silver Diamond Pendant. Diagonal silver stripes are intricately accented by diamonds on the middle stripe, and the see-through effect is exquisite.

Diagonal, silver criss-crossing lines once again make a bold impact in these Silver Diamond earrings. A masterpiece crafted of Sterling Silver, the front is studded with lines of diamonds weighing in at a total weight of a half-carat of. Whether she wears her hair up or down, you can guarantee all eyes will be on her glistening earlobes when she wears these beauties.

Let There Be Diamonds!

While many women wait until they meet the man of their dreams and he proposes to wear their first diamond(s), women born in April may have had it different from birth. Fortunate enough to have been born in the month assigned diamonds as their birthstone, April ladies have been able to ask for diamonds at every gift-giving occasion or holiday, simply by asking for a birthstone ring or necklace.

Now that we’ve entered April again, all you April ladies can fill your birthday wish lists with diamond studded earrings, bracelets, etc. But if you’re not an April lady… Don’t let that stop you from going diamond shopping yourself! Take your jewelry purchases into your own hands, and deck yourself out in diamonds like the April ladies do!

Diamond Rings

Diamonds are no longer limited ring-wise to the left-handed engagement ring! Every day new right-handed fashion rings are being introduced to the market, calling out to women everywhere to put a ring on it! Show stoppers like this half carat diamond ring set in white gold will have people noticing your right hand all day and night!

For a simple, yet no less sophisticated diamond ring option, this elegant diamond ring set on a gold heart band will have you feeling like a medieval princess. With a fifth of a carat of diamonds wrapping their way around your finger, the heart flourishes will keep your heart warm and cozy.

Diamond Earrings

Don’t forget! Diamonds aren’t only limited to the white variety! Diamonds are available in a wide array of colors, including blue, red, green, black and purple! These blue and white diamond earrings will bring whispers of envy to your ears from their admirers. Set in white gold, nearly a half carat of diamonds will shine brilliantly from your earlobes.

If colored diamonds aren’t quite the look you are looking for, Amidon Jewelers has an extensive collection of white diamond earrings for you to shop from. The Infinity white gold and diamond earrings are, in our opinion, infinitely gorgeous.

If you loved the Infinity diamond and gold earrings mentioned above, how about picking up another piece in the Infinite collection, the Infinite Diamond Pendant? Two 14K gold strands, one studded with diamonds, wrap around each other to create this stunning piece.

With a half carat total weight in diamonds, you will have your admirers crying tears of jealousy when you wear your new teardrop diamond pendant. Fancy enough for dress-up occasions and simple enough for casual, you will never cry over accessorizing dilemmas again when you add any of these fabulous pieces to your jewelry collection!
