Old to New: Custom Designs and Spring Cleaning for Jewelry

Spring is finally here, and that means many of us are elbows-deep in our annual spring cleaning frenzies.  It’s that time of year when we also look at freshening up our spring-summer wardrobes, and that should include your jewelry collection.  Whether it’s a simple cleaning of your jewelry itself, or a “deep clean” of your whole jewelry box, sorting through and, perhaps, parting with a few items to justify something new, it’s time to bring that sparkle back, and even make the old new again by repurposing unused jewelry pieces into a fresh, new custom design.

Spring Jewelry Cleaning and Inspection

Did you know that it’s recommended to have your jewelry cleaned and inspected at least once a year?  And twice a year is better.  While “home cleaning” of your jewelry is fine to keep it looking good in between professional cleanings, a professional jewelry cleaning is necessary to really get into all those tiny niches as well as to bring out the true shine and sparkle of diamonds and gemstones.  In addition, your jeweler will thoroughly inspect the piece to ensure there are no weak spots or other concerns that may need repair to prevent further wear or loss of a stone.

Making the Old New again

We all have at least a few pieces of jewelry in our collection that simply aren’t worn very often, or ever.  So, what’s the point of keeping them, hidden away from the world in a jewelry box?  Instead, turn that old jewelry into cash or – even better – a brand new custom designed piece crafted from the repurposed materials of your old or unworn jewelry.

If your goal is simply to clear out some clutter, then you might just sell it.  You can bring your old or unworn jewelry into just about any jeweler, who will appraise the piece’s value and often offer cash for jewelry on the spot.

If, on the other hand, the jewelry in question has any particular sentimental value, or if you just want to get creative and add a truly unique piece of jewelry to your collection, then you might consider repurposing that old, unworn jewelry into a brand new, custom designed piece.  The piece itself might simply be reworked to incorporate new stones, etc., or you might choose to have the precious metals melted down and create a new design from scratch.  Your jeweler can guide you through the custom jewelry design process to repurpose that neglected jewelry into something fresh and spectacular that you’ll want to wear every day.

Keeping The Family Heirloom Ticking

One of the most enduring symbols of a family that is connected is the family watch, passed down from generation to generation. Even as the world changed, first with the introduction of digital watches and then supplanted almost completely by the clocks that are part of cell phones, people still held on to these family heirlooms. Unfortunately, the biggest challenge often confronted by family members was finding skilled technicians that specialized in watch repair when the watches broke down. It would be disheartening to pass down something that was now just a symbol and not a working watch, but those feelings were tempered by the concerns over who to trust with the watch.

The art of watch repair fell out of flavor as the digital watch revolution was coupled with a shift in society towards more disposable items. When the cost of replacing something became less than the cost of repairing it, there was little incentive for people to learn the trade. Repair shops of all kinds began to close up shop, and those that survived did so by becoming a “Jack of all trades” establishment. It was not uncommon to see a shop that specialized in repairing electronics and appliances also advertising their watch repair services as well.

The trouble with such an establishment is that watches require specific tools and parts to keep working properly. It is easy to imagine that repairing something so small and yet with so many moving parts has almost nothing in common with replacing the belt on a dryer or rebuilding the motor on a vacuum cleaner. The only option left for people was to try and contact the original watch manufacturer and hope that they had somehow survived the collapse of the industry and could perform the work needed. If a person was lucky enough to find the business in question, they would then have to spend several anxious months while the watch was away.

The drive over the last several years towards custom design jewelry has created a new crop of trained professionals proficient in the art of watch repair. Many of them train directly with the companies that created the watch and are equipped with the proper tools. In just a matter of weeks they can restore the watch that has been in the family for generations back to its original glory.

Watch Repair For The Next Generation

this fall, and I have been searching to find him the perfect gift. It is more than just a present of “Congratulations.” You see, his father passed away several years ago, and so for most of his childhood, it has just been the two of us. I know it has been a struggle for him, watching his friends grow up differently than he did, and I wanted to somehow let him know how special he was. That was when I remembered the watch.

The men in my husband’s family had never been the type to wear fine jewelry. They certainly appreciated it, and my husband had a fantastic eye for finding the most beautiful pieces, from the diamond engagement ring he proposed with to the pearl necklace he surprised me with on our tenth anniversary. The one piece of jewelry that was important to the men, however, was a watch that my grandfather-in-law had gotten as a gift many years ago. It had been passed down from father to son, and my husband had worn it proudly.

After the funeral, I put it away with so many other things I couldn’t bear to look at. Remembering it now, I went up to the attic and started searching through the boxes. It was a bittersweet occasion, as many smiles as there were tears, and eventually I found the watch. Unfortunately, after all this time packed away, it had stopped working. I wanted my son to have this watch, but I didn’t want to give him a broken gift.

Talking with a girlfriend, she mentioned that the last time she had been downtown, she saw that the local jewelry store offered watch repair. I was cautious, because the watch was so old, it might be impossible to find someone who knew how to fix it or know where to get the parts. The repairman had the proper tools for the job, and even before he opened the case, he told me the story of the manufacturer, the history of this model, and, most importantly, that he could fix it.

I picked it up today and it looks and run beautifully. I can’t wait to give it to my son, a gift from both me and his father.

Keeping Your Jewelry Forever

After both of our children moved out and my husband and I were sure they wouldn’t be moving back home with us – in other words, started careers, got married and had kids of their own – we decided it was time for us to downsize a little bit. We took our time packing everything so we could decide what to keep and what to get rid of. In doing so, I was surprised at just how much old broken jewelry we had accumulated over the years. There were necklaces with broken clasps, watches that stopped working for unexplained reasons, and earrings that had lost their partners.

I’m not sure why we never did anything with these pieces of jewelry at the time. We knew we just couldn’t throw away diamond jewelry, but I guess we didn’t know a trustworthy place where we could either get the jewelry repaired or sell it off at a fair price. My husband did a little research into it, and it turns out, we could take care of both those needs at our local jewelry store.

What to do with Distressed Jewelry?

What to do with Distressed Jewelry?

My husband said the thought never occurred to him because we hadn’t bought any of the jewelry from the local store, but the jeweler said that most of their jewelry repair and watch repair business came from people in the same situation as us: jewelry they had owned for many years, in some cases decades, and basically forgotten about. He told us of watches that had been passed down from father to son and diamond jewelry that had been family heirlooms for generations.

We showed him all of the jewelry that we had and everything that we wanted fixed. He had technicians that had the training and the tools to fix them. A couple of the people even trained at the very factory where our watches had been made. As for the single earrings, nothing could be done to fix them obviously, but the jeweler offered to buy them for us. He weighed them, showed us what gold was selling for that day, and offered us that exact amount. We had enough to pay for all the repairs we needed and buy a housewarming gift for ourselves as well.

Make Sure to Get Your Engagement Ring Cleaned This Holiday Season

With the changing of the leaves and many upcoming holidays, many festive events and family gatherings tend to occur. This is a time to put your best foot forward as you travel around visiting friends and family members and meeting new people at these events. Putting your best foot forward means making sure every single detail on your person is perfectly in place – including your diamond jewelry. This is the perfect time for you to get your engagement ring and wedding ring cleaned. You may think your diamond engagement ring looks perfectly fine, but that is because you do not remember how much it is capable of sparkling when it is freshly cleaned and polished!

Having your rings cleaned is a must. Most jewelers offer this service free of charge when you purchase such an expensive item from them. Your engagement ring can certainly be classified as an expensive purchase. Besides your wedding ring, it is probably the most important piece of jewelry you will ever own. It is worn on your left ring finger to tell the entire world you are engaged or happily married. Since it probably has at least one diamond in the setting, you would be wise to have it cleaned before that holiday Christmas party or other such special event.

If you are recently engaged or married, then your friends and family will certainly want to see your new engagement ring or wedding band! The holiday season is the perfect excuse to get your ring cleaned because you will be showing it off so much. Having your ring cleaned only takes a few minutes, but it will last a while depending on how much you actually wear the ring. The more you wear your engagement ring, the more “crud” it will accumulate, making it appear duller than it should.

If you receive any jewelry for Christmas or Hanukkah, you will certainly want to get the rest of your jewelry cleaned because it will not look as shiny next to the new item. As you are out running your holiday errands, make it a point to swing into your local jewelry store to have your engagement ring cleaned. You may even find a lovely Christmas gift for your husband or fiance there! What man would not like a brand new, shiny watch as a gift? Hopefully, it will be on sale, which would further justify the purchase and allow you to mark one more person off from your shopping list.
