Summer Pleasures

With the sun shining and the kids out of school, many of us turn our thoughts to summer pleasures. Even if we don’t have kids or they’re all grown up, summer brings back memories, nostalgia, and the longing for simple beachy fun. Capture pleasure this season with the help of our summer recommendations.

This beautiful Amidon silver and diamond bangle looks perfect with a sundress or a tank top and shorts.

The Fruits of Summer

Berries. They’re so good, and full of antioxidants. Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries. Did we mention that even baked in a pie, the antioxidants are still practically bursting out of them? And don’t forget peaches, another pie-worthy fruit. Or delicious eaten as is. Watermelons are full of vitamins A and C.

Ice Cream

Okay, it’s harder to make a nutritional case for ice cream. But the frozen treat is undeniably associated with summer. Do you know what America’s favorite flavor is? According to the Food Channel, vanilla is the runaway winner with 29 percent of the vote. Chocolate is way behind at 8.9 percent. Rounding out the top ten are butter pecan, strawberry, Neopolitan, chocolate chip, French vanilla, cookies and cream, vanilla fudge ripple and praline pecan. If you’re wondering what the difference is between vanilla and French vanilla, the latter flavor is made with an egg custard base, giving it a richer, caramelized taste.

Beach Reading

What will you be reading at the beach this year? Or maybe on the porch, if the beach is too far away? Many book reviewers recommend J. Courtney Sullivan’s “The Engagements,” a book about four couples trying to understand marriage and the young copywriter who came up with De Beers’ tag line, “A diamond is forever.” We love books that feature jewels!

It’s also a good summer to reread F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby.” The recent movie version has spiked interest in 1920s fashions and the beautiful jewels of that era.

If you like a little horror in your summer, pick up “Joyland,” the new Stephen King novel. It features a college student working a summer job at an amusement park and the ghost that haunts the funhouse.

Summer Fashions

What to wear while you read a paperback and eat ice cream? We recommend a sundress, straw hat and some simple yet eye-catching jewelry. Silver looks great with a tan. A simple silver bangle goes with shorts and sandals or a pretty sundress. Summer hats call for dangling earrings. These beauties resemble delicate angel wings, and will bring a sparkle to your eyes.

These angel wing earrings look stunning hanging beneath your sun hat.

Memorial Day 2013

All over our country, Memorial Day has begun to be marked as the start of summer.  Rather than using waiting for the official start date of June 21, corporations mark the beginning of end of summer hours using the Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays.  While many know the essence of Memorial Day, the roots of this very patriotic holiday are commonly unknown.  With a short lesson from Amidon Jewelers, however, you’ll be able to teach those you are with a thing or two on this great day.

In 1968, just after the end of the Civil War, General John Logan, the head of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans, established Decoration Day.  Logan declared Decoration Day as a day to mark the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers.  That same year, the celebration was initiated at Arlington National Cemetery.  General and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant, along with various other Washington officials led the ceremony in which members of the Grand Army of the Republic made their way through the cemetery strewing flowers on Union and Confederate Graves.

In 1966, Waterloo, NY was named the official birthplace of Memorial Day, however it wasn’t until 1971 before Memorial Day became a national holiday.  This was when Memorial Day was declared to be the last Monday of May.  Present day Memorial Day celebrations at Arlington National Cemetery draw crowds of 5,000 people, the same number as the original Decoration Day, however rather than flowers, today each grave is marked by an American flag.  No matter how or when they died, each and every soldier in Arlington is memorialized on this day.

In December 2000, the U.S. Congress passed and President Bill Clinton signed into law “The National Moment of Remembrance Act.” This law created the White House Commission on the National Moment of Remembrance.  The commission’s charter is to “encourage the people of the United States to give something back to their country, which provides them so much freedom and opportunity.”  It also encourages all Americans to pause for a moment of silence at precisely 3pm local time.

Amidon Jewelers wishes a safe and happy holiday weekend to you and your loved ones, no matter how you wish to celebrate.  We hope, however, that our brief history lesson will encourage you and your acquaintances to pause at 3pm local time and remember those who made this holiday possible.  May the live veterans in your life be thanked and the dead never be forgotten.

2013 Prom Trends

Ladies and gentleman, THAT time of the year is upon us. The birds are chirping, the trees are beginning to show green, and slowly the flowers in our gardens are beginning to bloom. What season are we in? If you’re a high school girl or boy, you’ll likely think, ‘Prom Season!’

Saturday afternoons in the floral department at the local grocery or florist shop will become increasingly busy as teenagers dressed in gowns or tuxedos arrive to pick up their date’s corsage or boutonniere. Important accessories to help complete the prom attire package, the flowers on these pieces are often dyed to match the color of the girl’s dress. But how about the rest of HER accessories?

Mom and dad, this is where you come in. Sure, you’ve probably already helped cover the cost of her dress, hair, nails and shoes, but how about accessorizing your daughter with a piece of your own to help her make it a night she will remember?

The Prom Trends of 2013

High Necklines

As a parent, we’re sure you won’t be unhappy to see that necklines worked their way up on the body this year. Eliminating the need for a pendant or necklace of any kind, a dress of this style will be complemented perfectly by a stylish pair of earrings and/or bracelet. Amidon Jewelers has precisely the pieces you’re looking for.

Reminiscent of an infinity symbol, while wearing this Silver Diamond Bangle your little girl will never fail to remember that her mom and dad will always be there for her. Three diamonds accent the top of the bangle, each one representing one of you.

Turquoise has been an extremely popular color in recent years, and this year is no exception. Dads, remind your little girl that even though she’s almost out of high school she’s still “Daddy’s Little Girl” with a pair of Silver Diamond Earrings. These fancy diamonds will coordinate perfectly with her turquoise dress, and the hearts will remind her just how much she means to you.

Short Skirts and Asymmetrical Necklines

Complicating the accessorizing process a little further is this year’s trend of asymmetrical necklines. A fantastic pendant can really make this neckline POP, and the shape encourages the wearer to embellish herself with a great pair of earrings.

Playing off the criss-crossing lines which make up the asymmetrical neckline of her dress, we found this Imaya Silver Diamond Pendant. Diagonal silver stripes are intricately accented by diamonds on the middle stripe, and the see-through effect is exquisite.

Diagonal, silver criss-crossing lines once again make a bold impact in these Silver Diamond earrings. A masterpiece crafted of Sterling Silver, the front is studded with lines of diamonds weighing in at a total weight of a half-carat of. Whether she wears her hair up or down, you can guarantee all eyes will be on her glistening earlobes when she wears these beauties.
