Gurhan, the designer, is renowned for pioneering the revival of pure 24 karat gold jewelry.

Before Gurhan, pure gold jewelry had not been made since ancient times. Since Gurhan, others have also responded to its allure but there is only one original GURHAN! In recent years, Gurhan has added pure platinum and pure silver to his repertoire, creating for his followers options in white metal and at different price points. Gurhan has now introduced an entirely new direction in his designs, a new line, "4/24", using an early Ottoman alloy containing 4 karats of gold and combines it with his signature pure 24 karat gold.

GURHAN jewelry is also known for its distinctive aesthetic, featuring the evidence that every piece is painstakingly hand made from scratch. The hand hammering and natural imperfections, resulting from the handcrafting, are regarded as Gurhan's fingerprints on his jewelry.

Gurhan is Turkish but currently lives in New York City. Most of the jewelry is made in Turkey, but some of the custom pieces are done in his studio in New York. He works with 24k gold which has been put through an annealing (heating) process so that it is strong enough to be used in his jewelry. The gold is heated up to 800 degrees Celsius then cooled slowly over a 48 hour span, pounded out, and then the process is repeated. To strengthen some of the designs 22k gold is used for the earring posts, the Skittle rings have platinum cores, the spring rings have memory wire as the core, the bracelets and necklaces are string on femo (silk with a metal core), and the briolette stones are hung on platinum wire. Sterling silver is used in the oxidized sections on some pieces.

There is a lifetime guarantee on all Gurhan jewelry. If a piece needs to be fixed they will complete the labor, but they will charge for replacing any pieces that were lost when the piece broke. In order to maintain the lifetime warranty, all adjustments and resizing need to be sent to Gurhan. Rings are shelf-stocked in sizes 5 through 8 and the price is usually the same for those in that range. The designs are evaluated twice a year to determine which styles will no longer be produced, but old designs can still be special ordered.
