Canadian Diamonds

Canada is now the third largest supplier of diamonds in the world and consumers are taking note. Canadian diamonds are becoming increasingly popular for several reasons:
  • Canadian diamonds are conflict free - there are no civil wars in the Canada (no blood diamonds).
  • Consumers want to buy locally produced goods, diamonds included.
  • Canadian diamond mines and polishing facilities benefit the Aboriginal and Northern peoples in the economically challenged Northwest Territories.
  • Environmental protection laws for new mines are stronger in Canada than Africa, Russia and South America.
  • Only Canadian diamonds cut in the Northwest Territories are trackable, guaranteeing 100% non-conflict origin.

Diamonds Cut in Canada

Polar Bear and Polar Ice diamonds are mined, cut, polished and certified in Canada's Northwest Territories. All Polar diamonds are certified and tracked by the government of the Northwest Territories (NWT) from mines, to cutting facility, and then retailer.

Canadian Government Certified Diamonds

Most Canadian diamond rough parcels (uncut crystals) are sold to multinational cutters with facilities primarily in Israel, India, China and Vietnam where labor costs are lower than in Canada. These stone are marketed as Canadian, but are often cut in the same facilities as diamonds of other origins.

Up to 10% of high quality rough are supplied to local manufacturers in Yellow Knife, the capital of the Northwest Territories (NWT). Canada's two active mine owners signed agreements in the late 1990's to support the local secondary diamond industry - cutting and polishing. Polar Bear and Polar Ice diamonds are cut in Yellow Knife supporting the local economy.

Our Diamond

Polar Ice Canadian Diamond in Tweezer style pendant Canada's first producing diamond mine is located south of the Arctic circle in the Northwest Territories. The diamonds are mined, cut and polished in the Northwest Territories. Governement cerification is used to provide authenticity. There are high standards and requirements throughout the manufacturing process.

The Northwest Territories (NWT) certification provides the diamond proof that high standards were met, including a gemprint. A gemprints a non-invasive identification system, which scans the image of the diamond. This makes the diamond exclusively Canadian. Also, the diamond is provided with a serial number which is etched by microscopic laser on the girdle of the stone.

To assure authenticity, diamonds also have certificates from an independant lab such as AGS which specializes in special cuts.

All the above measures are taken to provide the consumer with authenticity, satisfaction and above all peace of mind.

Clarity

The rarest diamonds are flawless, maximizing clarity and brilliance when cut and polished. Clarity is the measure of how few inclusions are found within a diamond. Clarity gradings range from flawless to slight inclusions to imperfect. Formed deep below the earth's surface in the Canadian Arctic, The value of a Polar Ice™ diamond increases depending on the rarity of inclusions found within.

Cut

Polar Ice Diamonds™ are in the Top 3% of all diamonds cut world wide.

The cut of a diamond - its roundness, its depth and width, the uniformity of the facets - all determine a diamond's brilliance. Many gemologists consider cut the most important diamond characteristic because even if a diamond has perfect colour and clarity, a diamond with a poor cut will have dulled brilliance. The width and depth have the greatest effect on how light travels within the diamond, and how it exits in the form of brilliance.

A) The Ideal Cut

A beautifully cut Polar Ice Diamond™ is guaranteed to be cut to maximize the sparkle of a diamond - creating one of the most sought after diamonds of the modern era.

B) Cut Too Shallow

Light is lost out the bottom, causing the diamond to lose brilliance.

C) Cut Too Deep

When a diamond is cut too deeply it traps light and the diamond will appear dull and lifeless.

Carat Weight

Diamonds are valued not only for their clarity and colour, but also for their weight which is measured in carats. Each carat is divided into 100 points. A one-third carat diamond has 0.33 points and a one carat diamond has 100 points or 1.00 carats.

When diamonds are mined, large gems are discovered much less frequently than small ones, which makes large diamonds much more valuable. In fact, diamond prices rise exponentially with carat weight. So, a 2-carat diamond of a given quality is always worth more than two 1-carat diamonds of the same quality.

From the Arctic landscape comes one of the world's rarest and natural treasures. Canadian diamonds have captured international attention for their beauty, quality and craftsmanship.
